Men’s Health is often overlooked. Especially when it comes to talking about the prostate gland. Many of us only hear about it when we are discussing prostate cancer. And more of us don’t even know where it is or what it does.
The prostate is a rubbery gland about the size of a small tangerine that sits just inside the rectum, below the bladder.
What does the Prostate Do?
That is a great question. According to Web MD “The prostate secretes fluid that nourishes and protects sperm. During ejaculation, the prostate squeezes this fluid into the urethra, and it’s expelled with sperm as semen.”
Doesn’t sound that important does it? Well it’s also involved in male orgasm as it contracts during orgasm and helps heighten the feeling. somewhat the way the uterus does for women.
Needless to say, it seems like it causes more problems than provides benefits. However, it’s here to stay so, men, you might as well learn how to take care of it so it doesn’t cause trouble later.
Prostate Problems
The worst problems for men from the prostate are “hypertrophy” or enlargement which makes it difficult to urinate, and of course the well-known prostate cancer.
Simple Guidelines for a Happy Prostate
There are some very simple guidelines for how to keep the prostate happy.
- minimize or avoid alcohol
- minimize or avoid caffeine
- minimize or avoid spicy foods and peppers
- avoid being overweight and carrying a big fat belly (this is where your testosterone gets converted into estrogen. And guess what — your prostate doesn’t like estrogen!)
There are a number of supplements that can help keep the prostate healthy too such as zinc, saw palmetto, plant sterols, selenium, curcumin, and Vitamin D3.
In addition, as with many aspects of the human body, the old adage “use it or lose it” applies. It has been shown that regular ejaculation through sexual intercourse or masturbation can help keep the gland from becoming congested, which in turn can help keep it healthier.
So now Ladies, if you really Love that Man …
Testosterone and the Prostate
It has also been shown that, quite to the contrary of prior belief, testosterone is very good for the prostate. It used to be thought that testosterone caused prostate cancer. This has now been unequivocally shown to be a false assumption. And doesn’t it make sense? If testosterone is unhealthy, why are young men with screaming high testosterone so frickin’ healthy?
Well, it has also been shown by reviewing data that men with lower testosterone levels, in general, had more prostate problems and that, conversely, men with higher testosterone had healthier prostates.
This information is ground-breaking. And it is one of the reasons I am a strong believer in testosterone replacement for men when it is needed.
